Farewell Message to the X-Notifier Community

Forums
User Guide

Hello, X-Notifier community,

I've been with Tobwithu for 15 to 20 years. While the forum has been replaced 2 or 3 times, this one has stood for over 11 years.

I use this extension for Firefox and Thunderbird. It was great in the past, primarily because some websites like Hotmail don't offer IMAP and must be accessed via the website. That's where X-Notifier comes in to check the email.

However, it's been getting worse, especially with the introduction of second verification authorization (Two-Factor Authentication, 2FA), similar to Gmail and other platforms.

It's challenging for Tobwithu to write a program without knowing the background. For example, Gmail won't provide Tobwithu with the code necessary to check email due to security reasons, and other mail hosts follow suit.

I must thank Tobwithu for his effort for the past 15-20 years!

I requested Tobwithu to authorize the "User Guide" about 10 years and 8 months ago, and I haven't updated it since 5 years and 7 months ago.

Because I'll be moving away from Firefox, I'm currently opting for the Brave browser.

Nowadays, most email hosts allow us to use IMAP and check email.

It's time for me to bid farewell to all X-Notifier users. This will be my last time logging off, saying goodbye with tears... bye bye...

(I might check again several times with your reply. You cannot reply inside the "User Guide," but you can post on the main X-Notifier forums.)

Browser Profiles (-ProfileManager)

Forums
User Guide

For anyone not familiar with the concept:

Browser profiles aim to separate the clean browser installation from whatever user-chosen additional action. Profiles are parallel folders within the hidden browser installation folder. You can simply switch between them. Your (literary named) default profile folder is not affected. You can even start your fresh 'test' profile to test X-notifier, add all your regular stuff and decide to ditch (delete) your previous default profile in order to rename the 'test' profile to 'default'.

In the Run dialog box, type in (or use copy/paste to ensure correct ASCII code dash - ) :
firefox.exe -P
Note: You can use, -P, -p, or -ProfileManager (any of them should work).

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

By jeroen

For Macintosh users:

  1. Open the Terminal application.
  2. In the Terminal application, enter the following:
    /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -P
Note: You can use, -P, -p, or -ProfileManager (any of them should work).

X-notifier is not checking Gmail accounts w/ 2-factor

Forums
User Guide

PROBLEM:
The account with 2-factor authentication was not working anymore with X-notifier. (it's greyed).
It's because when I tried to type the code received via text it did not work.

SOLUTION:
You have to type only the 6 digits received via text message and not the G letter in front of the digits.

and

My situation was completely the same but I found a solution.

  1. Open the Gmail account manually,
  2. Logout,
  3. Then click login button in the main window.
  4. You will see a page about account verification (this is the cause of the issue).

Proceed to the next and now X-notifier works.

THANKS TO:
Egan and brightest

It solved my probem...
See other post that they suggests and solutions.
