New X-Notifier Deleted ALL My Settings

By OptimisticPessimist , 1 December 2016

Complete wipeout and I was not even able to save a copy. Great job. Thanks for telling me I need another email add-on.

X-Notifier "News" tells you...

...and X-Notifier tells you there's news ...if you use the forum script...

Me too

I was caught off guard as well.  If you go to that link in RpD's post, there is a link (at the bottom of the page) where you can download/install 3.5.23 and all your old settings should still be there, then you can export them.  I plan to continue to use 3.5.23 for as long as possible, as the 4.x version does not appeal to me (at least not yet), hopefully it will improve, as right now it looks fairly primitive.

auto-updates

Be sure to turn off 'automatic updates' for the X-Notifier addon, as well.

Without warning, it updated

Without warning, it updated itself and everything is gone :\
I'm sure many are like me and are just a 'basic' user, and don't follow X-Notifier News...
Maybe a notice should have been Emailed out and not a forced update that removes all your info??

Well...

Or Mozilla could have made their new browser put up a warning window that said "we've changed our API and all your add-ons may have to be rewritten and may lose features or gain others".

Sooo... where do you suppose the developer of X-Notifier keeps all our email addresses so he can send out warnings to each and every one? Otherwise, I guess he'd have to program a pop-up into X-Notifier 4.x, like "go back to old FF 49.x and X-Notifier 3.5.23 and Export your accounts first".... and then listen to complaints and "huh" about the pop-up.  Firefox offers the 'automatic updates' feature... which users can turn off... and... perhaps automatic is on by default? I don't remember... it's a chicken/egg situation.  Each addon has it's own update setting, but that defaults to "default" behavior, which means it follows the 'global' Firefox setting for automatic updates of all addons.

The developer purposely includes an "XN-forums" script to connect users and -notify- them of new posts... including News posts.
It is somewhat a user's priority to stay informed.  The old versions stopped with FF 49.x  and shouldn't auto-update if FF isn't updated beyond that version.  Auto-update to 4.x should then only happen with FF 50+.

If you want to return to 3.5.23 (which, for the moment, can be run on FF 50.x), read this:
