Can't get the latest X-Notifier to log in to any accounts

By JH , 24 June 2017

Just upgraded to the latest Firefox 54 (for Mac) after using an ancient version for years. X-Notifier still worked great at first but then must have auto-upgraded to the latest version, which I can’t get to work at all.

• Cleared all cookies for x-notifier and yahoo (the only email host I use).
• Re-entered each account and password info.

X-notifier will work on an account in which I am currently signed-in, but no other. (All other addresses are greyed out.) After logging out, the last account I used turns red.

'View other versions'

If you go to the Firefox addons webpage for X-Notifier...  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/xnotifier  ...and look down the page a little bit, there's a white box, and in small print in the white box,  you'll see "View other versions"... click that and you can download whatever you want.
ALSO... There is a post discussing a possible (yet another) newer version of Yahoo mail... which may not be working with the latest X-Notifier, but not everyone may have access to the newer version of Yahoo mail... yet. But apparently there is a link to return to an earlier version of Yahoo mail.

Maybe it doesn’t like Mac OS Sierra 10.12.5?

Thanks for the quick reply and the links.

All but one of my yahoo accounts are already set to the classic, no-frills versions so I don’t think that’s the issue.

As a test, I added a gmail account to the list, but X-Notifier behaves the same way it does with yahoo. (Except the Gmail listing doesn’t turn red. Still won’t connect though.) I don’t know if it’s important, but the Gmail listing has an icon in front of it but the yahoo addresses do not.

I disabled all other addons, but that didn’t help either.

I installed X-Notifier on a new laptop on a fresh Firefox install and it behaves the same way. Maybe it doesn’t like Mac OS Sierra 10.12.5?

I wasn't actually planning to upgrade Firefox just to keep X-Notifier working on my desktop, but that pesky autoupdate kicked in once I upgraded the OS.

Op sys upgrades break apps

Op sys upgrades break apps less often than other things.
One can install older versions of applications, like Firefox... but it can be a security risk and then you have to turn off auto-updating.  For add-ons, you can turn off auto-update for just a specific add-on or 'globally' for all add-ons.  If you run ancient software, it's more likely to need to disable auto-update globally.  Mozilla has some commentary about how to try to fix problems, before they offer links to older versions of Firefox... https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-older-version-of-firefox
I would make a real effort to fix the problems rather than run outdated software... there are a lot of users successfully running the new versions of software.

Thanks. That's my inclination

Thanks. That's my inclination too. Hopefully someone will recognize my troubles and let me know what I'm doing wrong.

The one thing this experience has taught me is how much better X-Notifier is than any available alternative. I would have skipped the hassle and moved on to another notifier, but none of the others have comparable features.

troubles

It may be that yahoo has changed and another X-Notifier update may be necessary to fix that.
Yes, there isn't a comparable competitor for X-Notifier unless you only use a single email provider for which there is a good notifier, like gmail, perhaps.

There are posts elsewhere

There are posts elsewhere about this. X Notifier no longer works with Yahoo. So far as I am aware this applies to all versions of Yahoo - including the basic interface and all versions of X Notifier including Neo. It stopped working around the 23rd June.

Thanks for the head's up. I

Thanks for the head's up. I didn't recognize my symptoms described elsewhere, so I figured it was only me :)

That gives me hope it will be fixed.
