Anybody have any sugestions on how to get notification if something is in these lables? Now the choices are theprimary and spam. Personally I have used then to separate my emails but still would like to know when something arrives. Thanks for any thoughts

Category Notification
These "smart-labels" are called Categories in Gmail.
You get notified for receiving messages in Categories by unchecking Notify inbox only.
When you use filter(s) to apply a label to incoming messages while skipping the inbox (archiving) these get notified too in this case.

Mmm
I assume you click the X-notifier icon notifying a number of messages and that takes you to the Gmail page.
On top of that page you see a big inputfield where you can type is:unread and hit the Enter key on your keyboard. That will show all your unread messages excluding your spam. To show spam type in:spam.
