Gmail not working

About a week or so ago, gmail stopped working completely. It is grey and when I click on it, it takes me to https://inbox.google.com where I am logged normal into my gmail account. Around this time, Google somehow switched my gmail account automatically to the new google inbox, which is where that link takes you. Is this the cause of this problem? And how can I solve the problem?

This seems to be caused by Gmail being extra careful about who or what logs in to your gmail accounts. I have been locked out of all three of my gmail accounts every day or second day since then. It forces me to provide a mobile phone number for the gmail account, then I have to change my password, and then I have to update X-notifier passwords also. An update was issued to fix this problem, but it has not fixed the problem. I'm hoping it can be fixed soon, or I may have to migrate these accounts to LastPass, KeePass or DashLane.

When you go to inbox.google.com for the 1st time you get the popup in the right-below corner that lets you choose whether you want to stay in inbox or in gmail. I just got that and have chosen gmail. I think, when you choose inbox it will always redirect you (and X-notifier) there. So of course X-notifier will not work then. I have not found the way to undo this yet. Perhaps someone else?

Link (opens in a new tab):  Turn redirect setting on or off

Settings: Other section

Yeah, in my case, it occurred automatically. My assumption is that Google makes some sort of behind-the-scene analysis and when they see that someone accesses gmail through inbox regularly for a certain period of time, they change it automatically. Anyway, thanks for the tip. That seems to have solved the problem for now. Is there a way to make X-notifier work, even if it is being redirected by Google to inbox?

X-notifier depends on (it inspects) the page that gets received. So no, not possible.

And looking at inbox.google.com you don't see any mailcounts. The only way to notify unread mails there is to count the bold mails in every section... every cycle time (Check interval)... Seems quite ludicrous, if not impossible, to me!

I am migrating away from X-Notifier finally. I have given up on trying to get it working for Gmail.  It is obviously not supported any more.

Such a pity as I have been using X-Notifier for about 7 years now. it was so very, very handy. I can still use it for Yahoo email and others.

The main problem for me is Google themselves. They have made it impossible for any other service to usefully access gmail accounts. X-Notifier just fails to log in completely, and greys out all Gmail accounts. I have switched off all Gmail accounts in X-Notifier completely, since all that was happening is Google was insisting that I change my password after X-Notifier was flagged as an email hacker. After you change the password 40 times for each Gmaill account over a couple of months it is just no longer worth persisting.

The redirect link above bears absolutely no resemblance to any of my Gmail accounts whatsoever.

1/ There is no  main menu on the top left, the main menu is on the top right.

2/ There is no "Redirect Gmail to inbox.google.com" anywhere under any of the tabs within my settings.

3/ There are multiple tabs within my settings which are not even mentioned in this link.

That information is misleading, incorrect, and completely irrelevant to Gmail accounts today.

Are you using heritage GMAIL or the new INBOX?  You are not clear.  I only see 2 posts from you, the complaint and the migrating away from XN.

Yes, the 'Redirect...' setting IS there... (see below).

First...
- I've right-clicked the link in the original poster's first post for inbox.google.com, opening it in a new tab... and then clicked through the intro screens, then looked at the new Inbox by Gmail for my account, which was already logged in via Chrome.  Then I simply closed the tab without logging out.
- Next, I opened my gmail account using X-Notifier... and I got the pop-up Jeroen described above offering me a choice of Inbox or Gmail... I chose Gmail, and I was taken to mail.google.com and noticed I had a 'Welcome to Inbox by Gmail' email. I checked my Gmail account settings and I didn't find any 'Redirect...' option, nor any 'Other' category.
- So, I went back to inbox.google.com ...and right into my...inbox (new format).
Then I noticed the three horizontal bars at upper left for the 'Menu' for Inbox by Gmail, and clicked that... and SCROLLED all the way to the bottom of the new left-side menu for "Settings".  Clicked 'Settings' and saw four categories on the left of a pop-up window... Labels, Signature, Snooze, and... OTHER.  Clicked 'Other'... lo and behold, the option (UNchecked) to "Redirect Gmail to inbox.google.com".
Since I did not initially choose to enable Inbox... it was NOT checked, and I could just again close the tab without logging out.
(If you wish to UNcheck the 'Redirect...' box, be sure to click "DONE" at lower right after you've unchecked it.)
- X-Notifier continues to take me to mail.google.com and the 'old' user interface... and continues to check my three gmail accounts.

That is all.

Your first reaction on the original post concerning redirection to https://inbox.google.com is irrelevant and misleading. You are posting your issue in the wrong place here.

Yes, thanks Tr3b (our posts crossed).
