No sound notification for new gmail arrivals

No sound is played when new gmail arrives. I want to hear either a chime or a ring when new gmail arrives. Therefore i have installed X-notifier. It says a chime will be heard. Therefore I do not understand why there is no sound at all when new gmail arrives. I have Windows XP and Firefox as browser. Thank you for helping.

I loaded a sound into X-notifier when i first started using the add-on and it worked fine. Now i would like to change the sound but the preview function does not work now and X-notifier refuses to accept another and will not play the first one. What is the solution for this problem ?

First, it appears there are -some- WAV files that 'Preview Sound' will -not- play.
You might try opening the non-previewing WAV file in an audio editor...
...and re-saving it as a (default settings) WAV file again.

I also notice that 'Preview Sound' does -not- play the default system sound.

Next... the X-Notifier, Options, General tab, 'Play a sound' (must be checked) ...and that enables sound for the arrival of any/all mail, not just Gmail (unless you -only- have a gmail account set up).

You -can- set individual email account sounds though.
You will have to go the Firefox address bar, and...

- Type 'about:config' in the location bar to open a configuration page.
- Then you can type:  xnotifier   ...in that page's Search bar, and...
Look for your account in the listed accounts to find your account's line with 'enabled' at the end
- Then [Right-click] that .enabled line and in the popup menu, click 'Copy Name'
- Again... [Right-click] that .enabled line... and in the popup menu, click 'New' => 'String'
- In the new popup 'preference name' input box, [Right-click] and [Paste]
    ...THEN REPLACE 'enabled' with 'sound'
- And [Click] OK
- THEN, [Double-Click] the new .sound line, and you may enter the full path to your WAV sound file...
...in the form:  file:///C:/yourfolderpath/yoursound.wav
...(change the drive letter, if necessary)
- And lastly, [Click] OK

And Restart Firefox.

(Thanks to CFBancroft for text that I've modified above. I didn't see a User Guide for sound.)

I am DEAF, I do NOT care about the sounds!

You (RpD) and me already wrote and discuss about THE Sounds in OLD forums and it lost forever.
That include discuss about blink flash light via USB, when email arrive.
Tobwithu said that API do NOT support on ALL browser!

That make me not happy!
That hearing people enjoyed the sound when new email arrive,
While DEAF people NOT enjoy, that not include blink the light when email arrive.
BUT, I will create NEW User Guide the Sound FOR hearing people, when I have time, Smile.

And I was just crediting you for the format... and that I double-checked for a user guide on the topic.
Then, you know... as there are English speakers who don't care/acknowledge other languages... one must consider sound, or lack thereof. >;}

As far as a visual notification for the deaf... and whether all browsers support it or not...
Well, it seems there are other features that exist for Mozilla version and not Chrome, etc (or vice versa)... so a blinker would just be one of those limited features perhaps... so, that's a point for your debate.
Otherwise... there's the onscreen notification for which you can turn OFF the 'auto-hide notification', but yes, the display may go to sleep.  Nothing's perfect/fair.

As RpD pooint it out...

"English speakers who don't care/acknowledge other languages"

English can translate via Google Translate to other language...

"Do NOT care"... NOT apply here...

While "THE SOUND" .wav can NOT make it work for flash the light,
API do NOT support as Tobwithu said in past.

All Browser do NOT support API, to plug USB/flash the light to make it works!

Then MY attitude is "justify", DO NOT CARE for the sound,
because API do NOT support to make flash the light.

Therefore "Do NOT care" ... Do apply here!
(because you got what you want [THE SOUND], while I can NOT [flash the light].)

I hope my message across? Smile.

Go back to the point "Credit", Thank you, RpD!

I don't know why we have to write chapters in debate.
You changed the intention with a partial quote... the partial quote says English speakers don't care.
I said there are English speakers that don't care... that doesn't mean ALL.

Your original post about blinkers suggested that Tobwithu refused because not ALL browser could support it.
And I was suggesting that if SOME can support it, then why not do it? because there are other features that exist for only one set or the other.

Lastly... I guess I'm sorry I brought it up.  Care/don't care... whatever.
I offered a point of support for blinker.
And yes I equated not caring about guide for sound to not caring about other languages.
Yes, there is some similarity.

I'm done with this subject, but good luck with whatever can be done.
Programming is an art, not cast in stone.

Tobwithu could not able to write API to enable "blink" the light via USB or on Monitor.

I agree "programming is an art",
I am NO artist! Smile,
That why I depend on Tobwithu and others to make a wonderful VISUAL-ART without any single sounds,
that make me HAPPY!

Tobwithu recently fixed Yahoo. (3.4.3)

Some how Tobwithu missing just 'A' single code for sound, when he update with Yahoo.

I think he will fixed it on next version 3.4.4?

If you do not have problem with yahoo on version 3.4.2?
(go ahead revert to 3.4.2 until fixed on 3.4.4 ok? [I speak for myself, I just "guess"])

I note that the X-Notifier default "System New Mail Sound" is not working for me (also), in Windows 8.1, even though I definitely have a working sound file (default) assigned in Control Panel, Sounds, Windows sounds, New Mail Notification.
However.... a 'Custom wav file' WILL work.  So, until there is a (fix?), you could just as well assign a custom wav file to the setting for X-Notifier's sound Option on General tab, Advanced button, and browse for a good wav file... stored on your computer.
I use the old Apple/ICQ UhOh.wav  ;)...  so there's that and others for downloading, found here:  http://wavthis.com/SB.html
