I see a check now in the current version. Granted, when you click on an account, it does not open that account, but I do see check now and it does spin for a while and does finally finish (a lot longer than the previous version).
In X-Notifier version 4.0.2, there is indeed a "Check now" menu item, works great for me... and I can click on accounts to login. Although Mozilla forced changes on add-on developers, X-Notifier still works, although in a more limited way unfortunately.
