I think you mean you want to disable Java(script) in Chrome. I disabled the Java plugin completely in Chrome Version 33.0.1750.154 m and my X-Notifier 3.3.14 still works. However, as Jeroen mentions, Java is not the same as javascript.
I think Gabriele means Javascript (Netscape), not Java (Sun Microsystems, now belonging to Oracle).
Javascript (syntax-wise a subset of Java) is for clientside scripting, while Java is a real programming language for instance for clientside applets, server-side programming, like the Web (Application) Server that services a website, and other Web Applications and stand-alone or embedded (like cell phones) applications.
Client-side operates on the client: your computer. As from a website's html page, downloaded on your computer, displayed by your browser.
Server-side operates on the server: f.i. on the machine, where the webserver operates that sends you the html webpage you are requesting. It handles f.i. the retreaval of database data you are requesting on the website in your browser.
When you use Google Maps, also add your country's google url, like www.google.nl/es/it
Etcetera
I tested this in Chrome: It works! I also tried to add [*.]google.com and *.google.com, but this does not get accepted.
Without Javascript you loose all interaction functionality of a website. Unless you add exception rules for all websites you want to allow the use of Javascript.
Unfortunately, I cannot make exceptions work for me... tried different combinations of addresses for mail at gmail.com, google.com ...and it doesn't seem to care what I try. (Don't know if my other accounts are tripping up the whole process.) Also, the exception input box will take [*.]google.com ...but will -not- take *.google.com. The asterisk, with period, has to be enclosed in [ ] ...yet that still does not work either, for me.
As you mention, much X-Notifier functionality is lost anyway... ...you can't click an account and open it automatically in a new tab, for example. Probably can't even click the X-Notifier envelope icon to open accounts with new email. X-Notifier is of very limited use if one disables javascript.
I tried to post my reply from work location and got into the irritating process of entering captcha's, resulting in "we will examine and process your post later" (never). So anticipating that, I saved my reply and posted it at home.
But testing this at work location new mail got opened at icon click. No problem. I also mentioned in my post the * doesn't work (I edited my post several times. So you may missed it on first read). So you have to add exceptions for all used domain url's. (the first part of the url name, like www, is configured on the webserver machine. It is not part of the published name server's hostname)
So did you do gmail in particular? What was your exclusion? Maybe I should isolate my test to just one email account, because others that don't resolve seem to hang up the whole process... and may be why I can't open a new tab clicking on account (or icon as I supposed.) Yes I saw that * doesn't work... but their example suggests that [*.] would, unless that's just their shorthand for multitude of possibilities. However, the input box turns red when entering just *.etc, whereas the input is accepted as [*.]etc ...odd.
Yes, I tested with one gmail account after turning of javascript with exclusion of mail.google.com. Then added exclusion of drive.google.com to be able to go there. Then added calendar.google.com to find out it goes to www.google.com/calendar. So I added exclusion of www.google.com. And that worked. Then added maps.google.nl to be able to go there (drifting off topic).
Well... I reduced my X-Notifier accounts to -only- one Gmail account (no XN-forum, etc), and after disabling 'any site' from using javascript, I put the exclusion for: mail.google.com ...and restarted Chrome. Unfortunately for me, it will -not- work. I've even tried Chrome in 'incognito' mode (with X-Notifier enabled for incognito)... so there's nothing else to interfere. Still no go.
Strange about your being unable to use [*.] ...as soon as I put the closing bracket, the red goes away and I continue entering the web domain... and it's accepted, although it doesn't seem to work either.
I'm using Chrome Version 33.0.1750.154 m and X-Notifier 3.3.14.
I tested at my work location, so cannot check the versions now.
But after repeating the test at home for all my gmail.com accounts, you are right on all points (I now was able to us [*.]): I forgot to restart Chrome. After that all accounts got greyed out. But...
Then I added the exception for XN to allow javascript: chrome-extension://cdfjbkbddpfnoplfhceolpopfoepleco/ and my primary gmail account was not greyed out anymore! Then of course I had to click Check Now a second time for my other gmail accounts (normal behavior) and... I got notified for mail for one of them!! But...
Clicking on the account got me the gmail message that javascript was not enabled.
Then I added mail.google.com as exception and... Yes, the gmail account opened at icon account click, also after browser restart!! For all 5 Gmail accounts!!
Added the 4 emmatv.org gmail accounts without problem. And XN forums also works. XN Scripts does not... I guess you'd have to add exceptions for all accounts in the XN Scripts list 8-) ... Added without problem all my other accounts with their javascript exception rules. (Tele2.nl, ZonNet.nl, Hotmail.com, Yahoo.com, LinkedIn.com, Twitter.com, Facebook.com, Web.de)
Aha! (Yes, I restart my browser after every javascript setting change.) And Yes... after adding chrome-extension://cdfjbkbddpfnoplfhceolpopfoepleco/ to the 'Manage exceptions' list, all my accounts are checked fine. But as you say, in order to use the click-on-account to open a new tab logged into account... you have to add exceptions by each account. So I used [*.]google.com for Gmail, and [*.]tobwithu.com for the XN-forums... I think this is mostly solved for Gabriele now .
But for me, as I mentioned before (same Chrome & XN version), [*.]google.com does check, but does not open mail/drive/calendar: I have to add specific mail&drive&www.google.com to the exception list in order to escape the 'javascript is not enabled' message from google's webserver (confirmed by re-testing this).
Are you sure you can open your gmail on account click without adding mail.google.com?
Yes, I can check all my accounts (with xnotifier exception), but I have to add account exceptions to open tabs... and I used [*.]google.com for Gmail... I will retest... [Edit: Yes, besides xnotifier exclusion all I have to use is [*.]google.com and I can click my gmail account and it opens a tab logged into my gmail inbox... I'm not using xnotifier to access drive or calendar... (should I? ;)]. What's interesting is that Gmail specifically, when denied javascript access, will explain a lot more than the other account providers and even provide links to 'basic HTML' view and mobile access view.
Different behavior... I'm still on WinXP. Could that be it?
Yes, I understand we are not using xnotifier for google drive or calendar. And I understand this is an xnotifier forum. But Gabriele still has to add specific exceptions for those, when she experiences the same behavior as I do and wants to use those.
(I didn't understand the drive/calendar usage... thought it was through X-Notifier somehow. Sort of forgot all of Chrome was affected.) Oh, I'm using non-touch Win8 desktop... wouldn't think XP would be that different just accessing web address with javascript.
(Haha... I guess you are living on the XN forum all your browsing time. There is a whole www beyond XN, RpD... LOL) It's not plausible to me either that WinXP is the cause.
X-Notifier is donationware, and chose to also include a search assistant called Superfish... ...however, you candisable Superfish in the X-Notifier 'Options'...
Click, or right-click, the X-Notifier envelope icon, then click 'Options', and scroll down, and... UNcheck the box for "Use similar product search (Superfish)".
The X-Notifier author has chosen to include this search assistant for additional revenue, and it's his choice... and... users can simply disable it by unchecking the box.
I think it's highly doubtful that Extension Defender will change its opinion of labeling X-Notifier as 'adware' (not 'malware'). I'm pretty sure the only reason ED has labeled X-N as 'adware' is because of Superfish. Superfish says it allows users to "instantly compare prices and see similar items on millions of products in almost any online store", and that it is not spyware... however not many users like additional popups that are not part of the original add-on's purpose. http://www.similarproducts.net Superfish is... "to bring you a similar products finder on the shopping sites you visit. This system allows you to find better deals when shopping online. It instantly compares prices and finds similar products on millions of products on the web." It is an add-on for add-ons ....that provides revenue to the original/primary add-on's author. It can be easily disabled... and if there was any 'malware' properties, I expect it would have been identified and prohibited... so Extension Defender labels it as 'adware' (not 'malware').
I'm just a user of X-Notifier, and have nothing to do with the X-N software other than as a user/forum contributor. If you go to X-Notifier "Options" (where you define accounts for X-Notifier to check for email)... and scroll down the main Options window, there is a checkbox to (check the box) enable and disable (UNcheck the box) "Use similar product search (Superfish)". See it here: http://oi59.tinypic.com/14brzhd.jpg
In fact, until now I had no problems and it seems strange that it is labeled as adware: I submitted the extension folder to scan with malwarebytes antimalware and avast antivirus, and no threat was detected, I have also submitted the file. Crx in scan on VirusTotal and here no problem, and finally I used adwcleaner and also this specialized software for adware found no problems, after these tests are sure it is not adware regardless of what you tell me.
I take this opportunity to make two more questions:
1 - How do I configure my office account? address è@studio.unibo.it
2 - Google plus has been revised? On chrome but does not work on firefox portable works without problems ....
I will leave the Google+ question (and future questions) for others/admin ...I have trouble with Google+ checking, perhaps because I can only have one Google product active at a time, I'm not sure.
It now has version date 4-1-2014, but is still not working in Chrome and Opera Next for me either. Same goes for YouTube. I do have multiple working Gmail accounts.
I've had difficulties between browsers and accounts before... working in one browser, not in the other. Mozilla has been more reliable than Chrome.
