Thanks for the tips, CyberTooth. I gave up on trying to recover the account data, and started re-adding the accounts manually from memory (still some I don't remember, though). Then I noticed that clicking accounts in the XN accounts popup list actually logged me in to each account! That feature hasn't worked for almost two years now. I could see (by the bold text) whether or not there was new mail, but clicking the account item would only take me to the login page, and not log me in. But now, everything is working the way it is supposed to again. One click, and I'm in. Wow! From now on, I will keep an exported .xn file as a backup. But I still wish I knew what went wrong, why, and how to prevent it in the future. For future reference, it would still be helpful to know where XN stores account data. If the data is recoverable, it sure would be less time consuming that re-adding accounts manually. Anybody know?
Once you get your X-Notifier/accounts set up and working... it's a good idea to use the Export function in the X-Notifier 'Options' and save your account data... then later, if need be, you can simply Import the data using the Import function in X-Notifier 'Options'... that will restore your accounts and you won't need to reinput them.
If you didn't do that... I don't know if you'll be able to recover from any data storage. X-Notifier uses Firefox security to manage account passwords.
Unless you have a smart phone you are stuck. I do not have one and cannot access any of my email passwords.
Google require a smart phone in order to confirm that you are who you say you are to help you access your email addresses. I have no need for a smart phone, nor can I afford one.
I have therefore lost all of my email addresses and all my Firefox Add-ons except this one.
That is everything since 2006.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD WINDOWS 10 or you will lose everything as well.
Rather than a blanket condemnation, a simpler solution would simply be to do a BACKUP before you download/upgrade to Windows 10. Many people have upgraded to Win10 without such problems.
I do a back-up onto an external hard-drive every day at 12 noon.
I do a back-up onto what is called a pocket external hard-drive twice a week.
As Google has blanked out all my Gmail accounts, those back-ups do not help.
As for Gmail recovery, how about reading my thread about being unable to use it because I cannot get the four-digit code they send by SMS?
I blame Google for that but I also blame X-notifier as this forum is the ONLY one that functions now. It is also impossible to download a functioning X-notifier onto Chrome [I use Firefox]. I will not blame Windows 10 now because once I had gotten used to it I would not change back.
Short of buying a smart phone, which I do not want, do not need, will not use, and cannot afford on just a disability pension, just to enable me to get the code from Google to get my accounts back? And how am I supposed to get anywhere to buy a smart phone in any case? Taxis here do not have the facility of transporting a heavy electric wheelchair.
So yes, a blanket condemnation - including people who assume that I do not do a back-up and who keep telling me to go to Google account recovery when I have gone through the effing Google account recovery over and over again.
Why are you making this difficult? You cry that these accounts are important to you and expect everyone here who has given you suggestions to wave their magic wand and resolve this situation for you. If Google Voice is not an option, and you do not own or want to purchase a cell phone to recover your important files, surely you must have at least one friend that will allow you to receive an SMS txt for your recovery. If the answer is NO to all of them, then you are Sh!t out of Luck and need to quit crying. I know the pain of loosing important information, but you need to also try and help yourself.
I have helped a LOT of people... I'm not a kid... I've been a computer systems specialist for a utility with three branch offices and dozens of users (no, not a big utility)... I've done networking and programming, etc., etc.
The part that I don't understand is you making off-the-cuff remarks condemning first Windows 10 upgrade and then X-Notifier and the developer. You describe things in, I'm sorry , "user" terms. Some companies pass the blame on to 'the other guy', and leave users hanging. Then there are some users that can't be helped, whether they have attitude or make gloss over generalisms... they make life/help hard.
There are ways to receive SMS messages withOUT a phone for free... (you can google that phrase) ...here's a link to one : https://smsreceivefree.com
I don't think your gmail accounts are lost, you just need someone of technical aptitude to spend enough time to recover them. If you're going to lambaste anyone who makes comment on your general comments, no one will get anywhere.
There's a big difference between doing a system backup before a system upgrade and... daily backups... but recovering enough to fix many problems requires technical expertise... and patience, etc. You really do need to create your own topic, you can go to the top of these webpages and click "Forums"... on the resulting webpage, you click "Add new Forum topic"... you enter a Subject and Select a forum (X-Notifier for Firefox, or whatever), then you can type the Body, describing the problem and the steps you've tried... in explicit detail and avoid comments like X-Notifier just follows blindly along behind Google.
Unfortunately, both Tobwithu and I are changing residences apparently... I don't work for him, I'm just another user of X-N. Good luck.
Google Voice is a way to get another phone number from Google that can send/receive SMS TXT if you choose or foward any incoming calls to your mobile or land line. It is also a very effective way to block unwanted callers by only allowing blocked numbers to receive a disconnected voice message. Best of all, the number is free.
I have the opportunity to attempt to recover a friends GMAIL account. She has forgotten her password and not computer savy. I went through the process of recovering her e-mail. Yes it did ask for a mobile number but there was an option to select that you cannot access your mobile number. At that point it took you through another series of questions. If you know the answers, you should be able to recover.

My advice to you if your
My advice to you if your using Firefox , it's good to have it set up
with a email account and Sync your browser settings so that will
help you not lose your data and one good thing if you Sync Firefox
and all your extensions , bookmarks , you won't lose data also if
delete history , clear cache, without Syncing Firefox you could lose
your data and all your emails, password etc . I would say XNotifier
stores their data within the browser that has a email attached to it
I usually use Gmail account to Sync my browser and i use Firefox
also with XNotifier you need to set it up so it stores your password
and all you got do when you get a notification is log onto it and get
your emails .

Your account should be recoverable
