NEW X-Notifier... UPDATED to 4.0.3... Again SUPPORTS GMAIL (with fix for Yahoo, Hotmail 2-step)

The developer found a way around the problem with the "new" Gmail login and updated X-Notifier to 4.0.3 (also fixing some problem with Yahoo and Hotmail 2-step).

HOWEVER, he still recommends X-Notifier NEO (over the new 4.03) ...for Gmail.

where to download 4.03 for firefox? still shows 4.0.2...willing to gve it a try again althought i would prefer if version 3... was fixed...

The developer was so gracious to post an early announcement. Be patient.

Official Mozilla update that will operate from the add-ons page will of course take more time.

koullis's picture

i was asking because chrome and safari are updated already

jeroen's picture

Well, perhaps he is bound to the official Mozilla release. I now see he doesn't offer the other download location anymore. All download links point to the official Mozilla addons site. So my guess is we have to wait. Acceptance by Mozilla can take quite some time...

I registered just to express how much this pleases me :)

I've yet to find an alternative that works the way I want, so I am very much looking forward to the update.

Where is the new version?

It may have to come through the Mozilla Addons page... it takes time to get approved...

is there a way for notifier to work as older version on firefox and have the option "never remember history" enable?

After you install the older version, go to Firefox menu, Add-ons, find X-Notifier, click on 'More', scroll down and turn off Automatic updates.
(Don't turn off updates for all add-ons or for Firefox itself.)

The new version (4.0.3) is not working for me.  It looks like it's checking for mail, but it has been "looking" for 5-10 minutes.  I am going to uninstall it and start over from scratch and see if that makes a difference.  I was just wondering if anyone else is having an issue.  :/

This is a Firefox forum thread. X-notifier 4.0.3 is not yet available for Firefox (see above).

Or are you referring to the 4.0.3 version for Chrome? That is 'working' for my Gmail after manual login.

DeltaWhiskeyOne's picture

Yes, for Firefox.  It is available, which made me very happy.  I updated it to 4.0.3 and ... disappointment lol.  I don't use it for Chrome.  I tried to uninstall/reinstall, but it still won't work unfortunately.  I even went as far as to give "less secure" apps access in my google account settings for testing purposes, but to no avail.  Thank you for the reply tho :)

jeroen's picture

Right, it is available.

And works for me in Firefox 54.0b5 (64-bits).

DeltaWhiskeyOne's picture

I just checked and i'm on 53.0 and it says it is up to date.

jeroen's picture

Yes, I installed a portable Firefox on the beta channel to monitor XN version 4 there. On my regular Firefox (53.0) I am staying on XN 3.5.23 to keep all my custom scripts. Still hoping Gmail can also get fixed there, but the lifespan of XN 3.5.23 is limited anyway.

DeltaWhiskeyOne's picture

i'm on the same version as you and it doesn't appear that made a difference.  not sure what else i could try :/

You can read RpD's elaborate post here picking out the parts that concern version 4:

It might be simply resolved by removing cookies/cache or you might have (a) conflicting add0n(s). Testing in a clean profile should proof a working X-notifier. When you don't want to start fresh, you could try figure out which addon is causing the conflict. Sometimes it gets resolved by the order in which the addons get installed. It should work in Firefox 53.

That's a good idea, at least another angle to come at it from.  I honestly hope it's not another addon, but I'll look at some suspects anyway.  I had to grab some sleep or I would have responded earlier.  Thanks for the assistance, it's appreciated.

For anyone not familiar with the concept:
Browser profiles aim to separate the clean browser installation from whatever user-chosen additional action. Profiles are parallel folders within the hidden browser installation folder. You can simply switch between them. Your (literary named) default profile folder is not affected. You can even start your fresh 'test' profile to test X-notifier, add all your regular stuff and decide to ditch (delete) your previous default profile in order to rename the 'test' profile to 'default'.

In the Run dialog box, type in:
firefox.exe -P
Note: You can use -P, -p or -ProfileManager (any of them should work).

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

When I attempted to update xnotifier it wouldn't update. Trying to do an explicit update from AMO returns a dialog saying it "appears to be corrupt". FWIW I use FF48.0.2 on a Mac 10.6.7 system.

X-notifier 4 uses the WebExtensions A(pplication )P(rogram )I(nterface) serving Firefox 50+.

well, I just updated to 4.0.3 . I imported my backup from 3.5 or whatever the last 3.x version was.

Now none of my gmail accounts are checked.

Works with hotmail though.

I would restart fresh... remove X-Notifier, restart the browser, install X-Notifier and redefine accounts from scratch.  Sometimes importing the old doesn't work well.

Ok, that explains it. I'll just have to check gmail "manually" via my old bookmarklet and suppress the XN update checks.  At least 3.5.23 still works for my ATT email account.
